This partnership aims to deploy innovative, effective, insecticide-free solutions across several resorts to help preserve the quality of the guest experience, as well as visitors’ comfort and well-being. A pioneer and market leader in sustainable mosquito control in France, Biogents relies on more than 20 years of scientific expertise to support Club Med in deploying solutions designed to address an issue that has become increasingly critical for the tourism sector: helping to reduce mosquito-related nuisances. This approach is fully aligned with Club Med’s CSR commitments, which aim in particular to limit the use of chemical products and to prioritize preventive, non-chemical solutions whenever possible.

Biogents traps at Club Med La Caravelle

Biogents trap at Club Med Caravelle

An initial installation phase across selected Club Med resorts

The first deployments will begin as early as spring 2026, with an initial phase rolled out across two resorts:

  • Club Med Opio in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes): installation of 50 BG-Protector traps and 26 BG-GAT oviposition traps, complemented by capture monitoring systems and remote performance management tools.
  • Club Med La Caravelle in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe: deployment of 40 BG-Protector traps and 24 BG-GAT oviposition traps.

Deployed throughout the entire site, Biogents traps provide protection across the whole resort, from guest rooms to shared areas such as restaurants and swimming pools, ensuring effective, discreet, and continuous protection for both guests and staff.

A comfort and public health challenge at the heart of the guest experience

In natural environments that are particularly conducive to mosquito proliferation, protecting guests and staff is a critical priority, both to limit public health risks and to ensure a high-quality guest experience and optimal on-site conditions, at a time when mosquitoes have become a major public health concern.

Through this collaboration, Biogents and Club Med are helping to redefine hospitality standards by fully integrating mosquito control as a key component of the overall guest experience. This approach responds to a growing expectation: delivering a premium, nuisance-free experience in increasingly demanding environments. To meet this challenge, Club Med relies on the expertise of Biogents, a pioneer in this field, offering solutions that are tailored to these needs and fully aligned with Club Med’s CSR commitments.

Club Med and Biogents share strong CSR commitments, particularly when it comes to on-site well-being and environmental responsibility. The solutions we deploy fully align with this approach, having been designed to deliver long-term effectiveness while seamlessly integrating into demanding environments such as Club Med resorts,” emphasizes Hugo Plan, Co-Managing Director of Biogents.

At Club Med, the comfort and well-being of our teams and guests go hand in hand with our environmental commitments. The choice of Biogents solutions was a natural one, given their high level of effectiveness combined with a responsible and sustainable approach, perfectly suited to the demanding environments of our resorts. These solutions enable us to take concrete action to enhance the experience at each resort, while upholding our high standards
in terms of health, safety, and CSR,” states Thierry Kopferschmitt, EMEA Director of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment, Club Med.

Complementary solutions designed for long-term impact

To address the specific requirements of Club Med resorts, Biogents deploys a comprehensive approach built on the complementarity of its solutions and its strong field expertise. The strategy is first based on creating a protective barrier around the entire site through a network of professional-grade BG-Protector traps, positioned along the perimeter to capture mosquitoes before they reach living areas, by mimicking human presence (scent, breathing,
CO₂).

In parallel, stagnant water sources within the site are identified and eliminated to limit mosquito breeding within the protected area. This system is further reinforced by the installation of BG-GAT Reflect-Tech oviposition traps, which target mosquitoes at the reproduction stage and help sustainably reduce their population. This dual approach allows for a simultaneous reduction in both mosquito bites and overall mosquito presence over time.

Beyond equipment alone, Biogents stands out for its end-to-end expertise, from preliminary site audits to system installation, followed by monthly maintenance to ensure long-term performance. This approach is complemented by the BG-Counter, a measurement tool that enables precise, objective, and transparent monitoring of results.

Biogents Launches the AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS

PRESS RELEASE

Biogents Launches the AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS – A New Generation of Mosquito Traps for Sustainable and Highly Effective Mosquito Control

March 31, 2026 – As the Asian tiger mosquito continues to spread across France and its active season becomes increasingly longer, effective mosquito control is becoming a growing priority for homeowners, businesses, and public authorities alike.
Biogents, the pioneer and market leader in mosquito traps, announces the European launch of its next generation of effective and sustainable mosquito control solutions: AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS. Designed around consumer needs, these new traps offer an optimized user experience while supporting a more sustainable, long-term approach to mosquito control.
This new generation builds on Biogents’ proven portfolio of insecticide-free mosquito traps, whose effectiveness has been validated by scientific studies. With more than 20 years of expertise in mosquito control, Biogents is now the market leader in France, holding nearly 46% market share.

Biogents new AERO TRAP - more garden, fewer mosquitoes

A Redesigned Look for Better Garden Integration and an Improved User Experience

AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS are the only mosquito traps on the market that can operate either with or without CO₂. They are based on the same proven technology as the BG-Mosquitaire, launched by Biogents more than ten years ago and currently the number one mosquito trap in specialist garden and DIY retail channels. When combined with CO₂, the trap reduces mosquito bites by up to 87% and captures five times more mosquitoes.

Building on this proven technology, the new traps have been completely redesigned to further enhance the user experience. Both AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS feature a more contemporary design with rounded contours and a discreet black finish, allowing them to blend naturally into gardens and outdoor living spaces.

The redesign also reflects Biogents’ continued commitment to sustainability. The traps are manufactured in Germany, where Biogents was founded, and contain up to 95% recycled plastic.

Several practical improvements further simplify day-to-day use. The traps now feature a larger, rigid capture basket that is both more robust and easier to handle. Installing the attractant has also been simplified through a new contact-free insertion system, making setup cleaner and more convenient.
Another practical improvement allows users to connect up to three traps to a single power outlet, making it easier to extend mosquito protection across larger gardens.

Autre amélioration pratique : il est désormais possible de connecter en réseau jusqu’à trois pièges sur une seule prise électrique, afin d’étendre plus facilement la zone de protection dans les jardins de grande surface.

With or Without CO₂: AERO TRAP Delivers Flexible, High-Performance Mosquito Control

AERO TRAP was developed as a highly adaptable mosquito control solution. Used on its own, it primarily targets the Asian tiger mosquito, a species that is now firmly established throughout France. Independent laboratory testing ranked AERO TRAP as the most effective mosquito trap on the market that operates without CO₂. Combined with its competitive price point, this performance gives AERO TRAP the best performance-to-price ratio in its category, reflecting Biogents’ commitment to making highly effective mosquito control accessible to as many users as possible. Biogents traps work by mimicking the natural cues mosquitoes use to locate humans, particularly human body odor. They release the insecticide-free Biogents SWEETSCENT attractant, which reproduces these scent cues and lures mosquitoes into the capture system. For protection against all mosquito species, the trap can be upgraded with the CO₂ Booster Kit, available separately or included with AERO TRAP PLUS. The booster reproduces human respiration by releasing CO₂, one of the strongest mosquito attractants. Combining human scent with CO₂ increases capture rates by a factor of five compared with operation without CO₂. The CO₂ Booster Kit is also fully compatible with previous BG-Mosquitaire models.

MyBiogents App

When connected to the MyBiogents App, users can program CO₂ release schedules to maximize efficiency. The system is also exceptionally flexible, operating with virtually all commercially available CO₂ cylinders, including standard 425 g cylinders commonly used for sparkling water makers, making replacements easy to obtain.

AERO TRAP is currently the only mosquito trap on the market that offers CO₂ as an optional upgrade, allowing users to tailor mosquito protection to their individual needs.
Both AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS are available through garden centers, DIY retailers, and the Biogents online store, making these solutions easily accessible to customers throughout France.

MyBiogents App: Smart Support for Users

Both AERO TRAP and the BG-GAT Reflect-Tech can be paired with the MyBiogents App, which guides users through installation and everyday operation.
The app sends reminders when consumables need replacing and provides practical advice on optimal trap placement and eliminating standing water around the home. This digital support helps maximize trap performance while making mosquito control easier to manage.

A Comprehensive Approach to Long-Term Mosquito Control

For Biogents, effective mosquito control requires an integrated approach that combines prevention with trapping.
The first step is eliminating standing water around homes, the primary breeding sites for mosquitoes. AERO TRAP and AERO TRAP PLUS then target and capture adult mosquitoes, while complementary solutions such as the BG-GAT Reflect-Tech—also developed by Biogents and redesigned in 2025—focus on interrupting the mosquito breeding cycle.
This oviposition trap mimics an attractive egg-laying site and captures female mosquitoes before they can lay their eggs, helping reduce mosquito populations over time.
Together, these complementary solutions provide a sustainable way to significantly reduce mosquito populations in gardens and other outdoor spaces.

An Award-Winning Innovation for Sustainability and Performance

At the JdC Garden Trends Awards, held in Marseille in March 2026, AERO TRAP received the JdC Garden Trends Award – Most Sustainable Solution.
This recognition further reinforces its position as a responsible and highly effective solution for long-term mosquito control.

Insecticide-free Mosquito Control on Islands | Case studies

Successful Insecticide-Free Mosquito Control on Islands

What started as a mosquito nuisance problem on a few tropical islands has gradually developed into a new, insecticide-free approach to mosquito control.

For many island resorts, mosquitoes are more than just an annoyance. Warm temperatures, tropical vegetation, and constant breeding opportunities create ideal conditions for mosquito populations throughout the year. Traditionally, resorts have relied on frequent fogging with insecticides to keep mosquito numbers under control.

But fogging often only provides short-term relief. Mosquitoes quickly return from hidden breeding sites, and repeated pesticide use can affect beneficial insects and sensitive island ecosystems.

Together with the Entomologist and mosquito specialist Dr. Bart GJ Knols, Biogents took a different approach:

Instead of focusing on chemical control, the company developed a mosquito management strategy based on mosquito behavior. Over many years of research, Biogents designed traps that imitate the cues of a human body — including airflow patterns, visual contrasts, and artificial skin scents that attract mosquitoes.

Banwa Private Island - Place of Solitude

Image: Banwa Private Island, Philippines, where mosquitoes were eliminated over a 4-months period using Biogents traps

This is how it works:

The Biogents trap is designed to continuously attract and capture mosquitoes before they bite people. A fan generates air currents similar to those around a human body, while attractants imitate human skin odors. Once mosquitoes approach the trap, they are pulled into a collection chamber.

1) Air currents generated by the fan draw in the mosquitoes.
2) Upwards directed air flow imitates convection currents of a human body and dispenses artificial human skin scents.
3) A light-dark contrast acts as a visual cue.
Plug in the trap and let it run 24h/7 so that it constantly catches the mosquitoes before they bite you.
  • The trap imitates the cues of a human body which are attractive for mosquitoes.
For the mosquito, the trap looks just like a human being.
  • Skin scent plume produced by a human = Attractant plume dispersed by the trap
Cross section through the mosquito trap BG-Mosquitaire

The idea behind the island projects was simple:
instead of temporary mosquito reduction through spraying, the traps would operate continuously, 24 hours a day, while breeding sites were systematically managed.

Example of the distribution of the mosquito traps over an island

Banwa island with Biogents mosquito traps

One of the first large-scale projects was carried out in the Maldives at the Soneva Fushi resort:

The goal was to reduce mosquito populations without relying heavily on insecticides. The results were significant: scientific studies later documented a 98% reduction in mosquitoes on the island.

The approach was later expanded to additional islands.

Can such an insecticide-free approach truly be effective? Watch for yourself!

Banwa Philippines

Philippines, Banwa Private Island: In 2023, Banwa Private Island in North-eastern Palawan became the first mosquito-free island in the Philippines. This was the first island we tackled in the Philippines. They have seen a massive drop in mosquito numbers in just 3 months! The results are truly amazing, and the team was able to make this island mosquito-free within just 4 months. “Since two months I have not had a single bite, and I’m out and about day and night all the time – and they usually love me!”, Peter Nilsson, Banwa’s General Manager, noted.

Maldives, Soneva Fushi resort: In 2021, we reached an incredible milestone at Soneva Fushi – a massive 98% reduction in the mosquito population (see also their video on YouTube above and the scientific paper available for download below).

Biogents traps used on Nika Island, Maldives

Maldives, Nika Island resort: In 2023 we completed the installationof 56 Biogents BG-Mosquitaire traps on Nika Island Resort & Spa, which marks the 9th island in the Maldives.

Maldives, Joali Being resort: 102 Biogents AG mosquito traps have been installed at magnificent JOALI BEING resort in the Maldives, making this the 11th island that has adopted a pesticide-free approach to control mosquitoes in this country.

Maldives,  Malahini Kuda Bandos resort: March 2023 we completed installing Biogents mosquito traps on the 10th island in the Maldives, at Malahini Kuda Bandos. Yet another island that takes environmental responsibility seriously and wants to terminate detrimental fogging with pesticides.

Madagascar, Miavana resort: In October 2023 we completed the installation of 135 Biogents traps

Madagascar, Miavana resort: In October 2023 we completed the installation of 135 Biogents BG-Mosquitaire traps on this island, off the north-east coast of Madagascar in the spectacularly beautiful Miavana resort. They have 10 species of mosquitoes on the island.

Summer Island Maldives: April 2022 Summer Island Maldives has started implementing a new, eco-friendly strategy to eliminate mosquitoes from the island, without the need for fogging and using harmful pesticides. Summer Island’s Resort Manager Mari Shareef stated: “This project is not just about creating a mosquito-free environment for our guests. We want to show that these kinds of things can be done in a way where we don’t have to resort to harmful pesticides and chemicals.”

What makes the approach different is that it focuses on long-term population suppression rather than temporary control. The traps continuously remove mosquitoes from the environment while reducing the need for insecticide applications.

The results from these projects have also been documented scientifically. Two peer-reviewed studies — Jahir et al. (2022) and Knols et al. (2023) — demonstrated that mosquito populations on small islands could be reduced by more than 95%, with some islands achieving near elimination.

Today, Biogents’ island mosquito management projects are showing that effective mosquito control does not necessarily require large-scale pesticide use. Instead, a combination of behavioral science, continuous trapping, and targeted breeding-site management can offer an alternative solution for environmentally sensitive island environments.

Scientific Background

This groundbreaking method has already left its mark on numerous islands across diverse ecological landscapes. Backed by solid scientific evidence, its efficacy has been demonstrated through two notable publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Soneva on the Maldives: a massive 98% reduction of mosquito nusance within 6 months with Biogents traps

Soneva on the Maldives: a massive 98% reduction
The first study, conducted by Jahir et al. in 2022, showcases the remarkable results of implementing the mosquito trap-based control strategy on three Maldivian islands, including the prestigious Kunfunadhoo, home to Soneva Fushi—an acclaimed luxury island resort.

Puerco Island in the Philippines: mosquito-free within 4 months
Meanwhile, the second publication by Knols et al. in 2023 provides additional validation of the trapping-based approach, this time on Puerco Island in the Philippines.

The findings? Nothing short of astounding. In both studies, the mosquito population was nearly eliminated, marking a triumph in the fight against these pesky and potentially dangerous pests.

The evidence does not stop with these two publications. The method has been successfully implemented on numerous other small islands, further bolstering its effectiveness. Remarkably, we’ve achieved reductions in mosquito abundance of over 95%, with some islands witnessing the complete eradication of mosquitoes altogether!

Soneva leads the Way in Sustainable Mosquito Control in the Maldives

Soneva leads the Way in Sustainable Mosquito Control in the Maldives by using Biogents’ traps. The mosquito population was decreased by 98% within one year.

  • The implementation of an eco-friendly and sustainable mosquito control concept with Biogents mosquito traps reduces costs in comparison to conventional methods
  • The mosquito population was nearly eliminated within one year
  • Biogents trap system is highly efficient in the long-term use and it has not to fear the development of resistance
  • Halting of the use of insecticides results in a greater variety of the island’s flora and fauna
Biogenst traps are used on Soneva Island on Maldives

On the pristine island Soneva Fushi in the Maldives, Soneva had implemented a successful concept for mosquito control by using Biogents‘ trap system. Without using chemical fogging, the mosquito population was decreased by 98% within one year.

The islands of the Maldives have a significant mosquito problem, particularly during the monsoon season. Mosquitoes are not only a real nuisance for guests in this area but also a sincere health concern because of mosquito-borne illnesses, e.g. dengue and chikungunya – although the Maldives have been malaria free since 1984.

While many resorts use chemical fogging to manage the mosquito population, Soneva Fushi decided to cooperate with Biogents to establish an eco-friendly alternative more than one year ago. The aim of this partnership between Soneva and Biogents was to bring the mosquito population on the island of Kunfunadhoo, the home of Soneva Fushi, down to zero, and to set an example for a sustainable mosquito management system without using insecticides.

One month after the Biogents traps were put into operation, a sharp decline in the number of mosquitoes trapped on the island was already observed. In the meantime, the mosquito population has been reduced by 95-98%.

Before the partnership with Biogents, the mosquito population was managed by a conventional pest control company with hot fogging and mist blowing of insecticides without success. This extensive use of chemical treatment lead to a high level of resistance within the mosquito population and resulted in ineffectual treatments. The continued use of ineffective insecticides also caused significant impact on beneficial insects such as butterflies, dragon flies, bumble bees and beetles. The natural abundance of these insects was significantly reduced.

Since the introduction of the Biogents traps and elimination of chemical treatment the island’s flora and fauna has made an incredible recovery. Guests as well as local residents were able to experience the increase in native insects. The highly increased presence of pollinators lead to the flourishing of numerous plants and fruits, which are also used by the local restaurants. Additionally more birds visit the shores of Kunfunadhoo because of the returned abundance of fruits and insects. Even fire flies can be spotted again at night. Guests and residents alike are enjoying the sight and sounds of nature that had been lost.

To achieve these extraordinary results mosquito traps were combined with breeding site elimination. Over five hundred mosquito traps have been placed across Soneva Fushi. The traps come in two types: the BG-GAT trap targets Asian tiger mosquitoes that have already bitten someone and are now searching for a place to lay eggs. A second trap, the BG-Mosquitaire, attracts mosquitoes searching for blood, by using a combination of carbon dioxide and lactic acid to make an irresistible aroma mosquitoes mistake for a human.

In addition to the use of traps, the project leaders Bart Knols (medical entomologist, PhD MBA) and Akib Jahir (Soneva’s Integrated Pest Control Manager, MSc) also educated the whole staff about mosquito breeding sites to carry out a breeding site elimination. This included the reduction of the amount of stagnant water found on the island by reducing the use of tarpaulins as well as daily inspections of certain sectors to find mosquito larvaes, among other things. Also, island clean-up days were part of the strategy. This way they could remove coconut shells and any other objects that could contain water on a regular basis.

Soneva island on the MaldivesThe combination of trapping and breeding site elimination has had such dramatic results on Soneva Fushi that the system has been implemented on the neighbouring island Soneva Jani in the Noonu Atoll, where in one 48 hour period almost 3000 mosquitoes were caught in a single trap.

The success of this project shows that eco-friendly innovations combined with the knowledge of the nature of mosquitoes can be very efficient and overcome the problems of resistence.
